Late Summer 2014 Acting & Improvising: A Tour of Theatrical Styles With Steve Kleinedler & Kristen Schier

SteveKleinedlerSmall“Acting & Improvising: A Tour of Theatrical Styles”: There are many skills stage actors can learn from improv. Likewise, there are many skills improvisers can learn from scripted theatre. This eight week elective class explores three theatrical genres: classical, mid 20th century American classical, and absurdist, represented by Moliere, Williams, and Beckett. Students will rehearse scenes from these three playwrights, and then will explore these genres’ tropes as an inspiration for improvisation. Kristen and Steve collectively have decades of KristenSchier_smallexperience in both scripted and improvisational theatre. The class will culminate in a show that incorporates both scripted work and improvisation. Some memorization is required for this class. The goal is to introduce acting skills or improve existing acting skills for the student so that they can incorporate acting techniques in their improv; additionally, students will learn how certain improvisation skills can enhance their acting abilities.
