Philly Improv Theater is excited to announce a brand-new education program for elementary, middle, and high school students — PHIT Kids & Teens. Registration is now open for our 10-week courses launching on Saturday, February 28, 2015 with a free Open House on Saturday, January 24, 2015.
Philly Improv Theater is committed to growing the next generation of great comedic performers. Our stage and classroom is open to all, from the smallest of aspiring comedians to high schoolers hoping to prepare for our adult classes and beyond. Our Kids & Teens classes create a safe and inclusive space for young people to develop their innate curiosity, creativity and ability to work to with others.
Our grade schoolers begin with improvised play through fun theatre games and storytelling activities. Moving on through middle school, students extend their improv skills by learning short-form improvised games for performance. In our high school program, young improvisers learn advanced skills and concepts from our adult classes, adapted for teens.
PHIT company member Rachel Semigran, who serves as the PHIT Kids & Teens Coordinator, has worked for 18 months with the program’s faculty to develop this opportunity for youth in Philly (and beyond) to benefit from the same nationally recognized training and opportunities that our adult students every 52 weeks a year at the theater. Prior to beginning as PHIT Kids & Teens Coordinator Rachel earned a masters degree in Applied Theatre focusing on drama in the community and drama education from the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, University of London. She has worked internationally with Old Vic New Voices at the Old Vic Theatre, The British Museum, The BRIT School, and in the City of Philadelphia with the School District of Philadelphia.
Working alongside Rachel to create our amazing curriculums have been our wonderful Kids & Teens faculty:

“I can’t wait to see these classes get started – as a former classroom teacher I have always hoped PHIT would one day be in a position to start classes for youth and Rachel has finally made that a reality,” said Greg Maughan, PHIT’s Executive Director. “The work we’ve been doing for more than a year is top notch, and the collection of instructors we have assembled should be the envy of any children’s theater program in the city. I can’t wait to start and I can’t wait to see where else PHIT Kids & Teens will go as we expand in the future.”
