Beginner Improv Skills: Students will learn a combination of storytelling, theatrical, and improv comedy skills with a core focus on improvised scene work. Through a series of fun and imaginative games and lessons, students will gain skills in listening, cooperation, character, environments, object work, and thinking on their feet. The course will culminate in a class demonstration by the students of an improvised play, using a story outline filled in by the students.

Tenara is a theater educator and artist and joined the Kids and Teens team at PHIT in the Spring of 2018. She has worked with and continues to make theater with a number of companies, including Trinity Repertory Company, Pig Iron Theatre Company, Allens Lane Art Center, Lightning Rod Special, Art Church of West Philadelphia, and First Person Arts. In addition to performance and theater education, Tenara also teaches Pre-K at Trinity Playgroup in Center City. Tenara first came to PHIT as an adult improv student. Outside of performance and teaching, you can find Tenara winning Harry Potter quizzos.
Derrick joined the PHIT’s Kids & Teens teaching staff in the fall of 2016. He is currently a member of PHIT house team Metropolis and sketch house team Fezziwig. Additionally he can be seen performing with his indie team, Toothbrush Money. Derrick has worked as a high school math teacher in Philadelphia for the past seven years and previously worked as a summer camp counselor and after-school program facilitator for elementary-aged children for three years. When not teaching or performing improv, Derrick enjoys playing piano, intramural sports with coworkers, and board games.
